America and Australia meet Scandinavia in an evening filled with energy, groove, and vibrant sounds. Join Dave and Anders, two vibraphone masters, along with a trio of energetic, young percussionists studying in Piteå for a concert unlike any other!
Dave Samuels has established himself as the top mallet player of his generation. He is recognized for his fresh new sound and creative approach to both the vibraphone and marimba. Samuels has demonstrated his versatility and gained world wide recognition by performing and recording with a broad scope of artists ranging from Gerry Mulligan, Oscar Peterson, Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Carla Bley and Pat Metheny to the Yellowjackets, Bruce Hornsby, Frank Zappa, The Fantasy Band and Spyro Gyra. In addition to his playing, Samuels is a respected educator and author and some of his new works can be found at MalletWorks.com and JazzBooks.com. Samuels has been voted “Best Vibes Player” in both Jazziz and Modern Drummer magazines and received numerous Grammy nominations.
As a mallet specialist, Anders Ã…strand regularly performs recitals and clinics throughout the US, Australia, and Europe, both as a soloist and together with his percussion ensemble Global Percussion Network. Anders Ã…strand has performed several times at PASIC (Percussive Arts Society International Convention) and various other world-renowned international festivals. In his compositions, Ã…strand focuses on improvisation as an essential feature for soloists as well as the ensemble. In addition to mallet music, Ã…strand has been commissioned to compose for brass quintets, saxophone quartet, choirs, and big bands. A more spectacular side features compositions for ice instruments to be performed by percussion ensemble (one of the concerts also featured fighter aircraft as instruments), tractors, and an entire building being inaugurated. Ã…strand has also composed music for multimedia performances including dance, video projections, ice instruments, and fire sculptures.
Evolussion Trio is a recently formed group of young percussionists studying and living in Piteå, Sweden to absorb the musicality of their mentor, Anders Åstrand. Maria Finkelmeier (from Cincinnati, Ohio, USA), Charles Martin (from Canberra, Australia), and Jacob Remington (from Fort Worth, Texas, USA) have just recently come together in Norrbotten. During the next two years, they will strive to build international relationships within the percussive arts as well as commission, compose, and perform new works for percussion soloists and ensembles.
